PREFACE: I know that writing a block of text underneath a link that leads to a much larger block of text (one which realistically requires having read a previously-written block of text in order to properly parse) on tumblr is sort of the equivalent of handing out xerox’d copies of the Magna Carta to 2nd graders walking home from school and saying “just trust me this is important” BUT:
John Scalzi wrote a piece directed to GAMERS (a group that I consider myself a part of and with whom I assume a large contingency of my followers ID with). Scalzi’s piece was about PRIVILEGE, and attempted to re-frame the P-ISSUE using a video game metaphor in the hopes that GAMERS, a segment of the population that frequently SUCKS AT NOT BEING TERRIBLE would listen and not flip out and be terrible.
Tons of people flipped out and were terrible.
So then my friend Sam shared a link to this article by Dr. Sheilia Addison (also linked up at the top) that was a response to the response to Scalzi’s initial article, and I think it’s a really good thing to read if you give a shit about this kind of thing, WHICH YOU SHOULD because the sooner the larger geek universe gets its collective shit together re: not being a predominately hateful mass of impossible-to-reason-with Adventure Time devotees the sooner I can stop being exasperated all the time.
